Tainted By Trolls
Currently residing in Richmond California a suburb of San Francisco, Shane Otis is the production artist behind the creation of the audio and visual work of Tainted By Trolls. He has played in bands for years, Madcap in the early 90's, You're In Uranus though the rest of the 90's and Llama Dali in the early 00's, most recently and currently with rock band Victory & Associates. Shane is a shredding, kick ass rock guitarist first and foremost and in between bands needs music to create on his own to satisfy his musical creativity. Tainted By Trolls could be called a true solo project as Shane covers essentially everything...at one point or another... He plays the parts either on guitar or synthesizer and records and assembles them on the computer, then further arranges and assembles the pieces until the project is suitable for live performance. Live performance is handled by a Macbook Pro and RME Fireface combo. This "backup band" is submixed and run to 15" amplified speakers and guitar is run through old school tube amps. Tainted By Trolls uses elements of sampling and sequencing while allowing for improvisation combined with live performance. In addition to hypnotic sounds, Shane sometimes creates psychedelic video to some of the music.
The music is energetic electronic metallic rock. It's agressive distorted guitars could cause one to think the music is guitar heavy. On the other hand, the danceable grooves heady beats could cause one to think the music is dance music. What is it? It's both and yet neither. Download it and you decide. One eloquent fan suggested that listening to the song Bulbous Aquaticus “felt like it took me around the Universe and dropped me back in front of my keyboard.” The music is more oriented toward the creation of soundscapes rather than the traditional pop music paradigm. Tainted By Trolls is one man's vision as interpreted through the lens of a life-long musical appetite and a varied, unrestricted interest in different genres.
The music is composed and performed using Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Korg and Native Instruments virtual analog synthesizers, a Macbook Pro, RME Fireface audio interface, live electric guitars and warm tube real amps. The RME Fireface allows for personal on stage mixing and control over the sound.
Tainted By Trolls is inspired by creative psychedelic electronic music like EOTO, Shpongle, old school classic rock and metal of too many bands to name and organic cookies
